This paper examines the role of Muslim academics and scholar-activists in Indonesia. It will track their genealogy from the formative years of the Indonesian republic to the post-1998 Reformasi Era, highlighting some distinctive characteristics of Islamic intellectualism in this often neglected part of the Muslim world. In addition, it will relate these discourses to the generic fields of intellectual history and the sociology of knowledge in order to determine the relevance of concepts and notions developed in these fields for the study of non-Western intelligentsias.
